Mac and Google lover goes to Verizon
As an avid Mac user (personally) and a big fan of Google, I recently went to Verizon to decide what to replace my blackberry with – an iPhone or a Droid. I have been paying attention to the debates, articles and rumors regarding the two phones and one particular nugget of news caught my attention – Apple is following you on your iPhone.
Well of course they are. With GPS functionality, most phones can track your whereabouts unless you have the proper settings set up – right? With Apple’s advertising campaign “If you don’t have an iPhone, you don’t have an iPhone” I was reminded of Apple’s famous 1984 commercial depicting George Orwell’s 1984. I Googled “iphone apple 1984” and immediately found a lot of similar thinking.
Apple has a crazy following and influence over its loyal fans. They have a lot of control over the iPhone’s apps, functionality and platform, while the Droid platform allows for more customization and flexibility. I have wanted an iPhone since it first came out for AT&T, but when I have compared it with my friend’s HTC Incredible (last year’s model) and another friend’s HTC Thunderbolt (Verizon 4G) I started to question the iPhone.
I like many I have been programmed and marketed to by Apple to believe that their products and platforms are the most ergonomical and best on the market. Their reach is impressive and almost scary with their loyal followers. So when you know you are being heavily marketed to, compare the products side by side and try to ignore the noise of advertising, you just might be pleasantly surprised.
In case you are wondering I am returning the iPhone for the HTC Incredible2 due in Verizon stores next week.
UPDATE: The HTC Incredible2 died within 5 days. I am very happy with my iPhone.
